Artist Residency with Bobby Bird

Watt’s Orbit

27 June – 7 July 2019

Sonic artist Bobby Bird will be in residence at Vivid Projects in June, creating a surround sound installation and developing his transcendental performance work Watt’s Orbit, which features the rhythms and sounds of 250 year old steam driven beam engines designed by the 18th century Scottish inventor James Watt.

Newly captured recordings of Watt’s Smethwick Engine, the oldest working engine in the world (currently housed at Think Tank) will be combined with three previously recorded engines to create a work suitable for installation. The residency is followed by a full scale octophonic concert performance at St Paul’s Jewellery Quarter 21/09 s a part of James Watt Bicentenary celebrations.

The residency provides a wonderful opportunity for music students, artists,  curators and other interested parties to meet the artist, hear work in progress, and get an inside view of the artistic process involved in creating this unique piece.

Bobby Bird is a Birmingham based musician, artist and DJ. He has released a number of widely acclaimed electronic music albums as Higher Intelligence Agency,  including Birmingham Frequencies in collaboration with Geir Jennsen / Biosphere, featuring the sounds of Birmingham. He has also collaborated on albums with Move D and Pete Namlook, and played guitar for the late great Ranking Roger of The Beat.
